From New York Times Bestseller Pepper Winters comes a timeless love story answering the question of what happens when everything is stripped away.
“There is a message for everything. From handwritten to verbal, seen and unseen. Messages exist all around us.”
But what if you don’t see?
What if you don’t understand?
What if, by ignoring the message, your life is never the same again?
Estelle Evermore morphed from nobody to somebody overnight.
Galloway Oak put his past behind him and endeavored to make his fortune using his trade.
Multiple unseen messages.
From sky to island, they find neither fame nor skills can save them. Stripped from society and left alone to survive the elements, the very task of staying alive outweighs all other needs.
Until survival turns to desire.
And desire turns to danger.
I have no idea where to start with this one. I’ll start by admitting this took me a while to get into. It’s a long book by today’s standards. I found it slightly daunting to begin with if I’m honest. I picked this up a few times then had to put it down again. I was a little scared with where I thought the story was going. Turns out the story went in a completely different direction.
Once within a song, a music lover and a broken man fell from the sky. It changed their lives forever.
Without giving away to much about the story I’ll try to convey how I felt reading it. As I’ve already said, I was scared of this story. How an author can strike so much fear into a reader within just a few pages is amazing to me. The fear and unease in the first few chapters never really went away. There were chapters that made me smile, parts that had me a little frustrated and pages upon pages of utter heartbreak. But through it all is a breath taking story of hope and love. And I do mean breathtaking. I read parts of this in floods of tears barely able to breathe. It hurt to read.
Breathe. That’s all you have to do. Breathe. When life shines brightly. Breathe. When the world turns its back. Breathe. When nothing works out. Breathe.
Estelle Evermore took me on her journey. I related to her so much. I could feel myself nodding along and agreeing with her every thought through the first part of the book. She is without doubt one of the strongest heroines I’ve ever read. Galloway Oak. I’m not sure how to put this man into words. I expected a tortured soul (it’s Pepper Winters after all) but I did not expect to love him so fiercely.
There was a point in the book about 40% in where I was contemplating not finishing. I couldn’t see where the story was going and I was worried it was going to be dragged out over the next few hundred pages. I’ll forever be glad that I did. There’s a kind of lull in the story, but the storyline needs it. Stick with it.
I can’t express clearly enough how beautiful this book is. Pepper has a way of setting a scene so vivid that I felt like I was there with these characters.
I’d suggest you put your expectations to one side for this one. If you’ve read Pepper Winters other works and think you have an idea what to expect, you have no idea.
I’ve not been able to put these characters to rest. I still feel that knot of tension when I think of what they went through. That burn of tears in my throat when I get asked to describe the story.
I’d recommend this book to anyone. I’ve no idea how to fit it into any kind of category but it just needs to be read.
